Orthodox Christians in Gaza Observe Solemn Good Friday Amidst War and Siege

On Friday, Orthodox Christians in Gaza marked Good Friday with a somber service at Saint Porphyrius Church. The observance was characterized by grief and reflection, set against the ongoing backdrop of war and blockade.

The church held prayers and religious rites attended by worshippers. Traditional ceremonies were conducted and candles were lit, though current circumstances prevented the community from engaging in customary festive elements, such as decorations and celebrations typically associated with Easter.

The situation in Gaza was described as one of "destruction, siege, and closure," which has profoundly impacted both religious and social life. Participants noted the continued restrictions preventing access to Jerusalem for religious observances.

Attendees also spoke about the profound transformations war has imposed on daily life. They observed that previous scenes of joy have been replaced by the sounds of bombardment, fear, and instability—effects felt acutely by children.

Speakers called for peace and justice in the region, urging the international community to heed the ongoing plight in Gaza and to work towards ending the persistent suffering of its inhabitants.
